Recently, a member running for the ACT Party called kids who are struggling "little shits". Kerry and I talked about Executive Dysfunction and Working Memory, and how these appear as behavioural issues. But they are often a 'can't' hiding behind a 'won't'. The full recording will be available shortly. Kerry was a great listener and the time went quickly.
We explored the importance of transitioning our focus from labelling to collaboration, shifting from a mindset of failure to one of success. Blaming children and labelling their behaviour has no place; instead, we discussed working on finding solutions and moving forward to create successful individuals who feel celebrated, not merely tolerated.
As a trauma-informed parent, a disability advocate, and a neuro-affirming clinician, I will never support the need for teachers to forcibly remove children - CHILDREN - from classrooms. Instead, I propose to these ministers that it is, in fact, the classrooms that need to be forcibly altered, not the tamariki doing their best with the skills they have available to them
